Rock Climbing An Olympic Sport?

Marco Scolaris, president of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC), has a dream to make the sport of rock climbing an Olympic event. This past week in Vancouver the International Olympic Committee (IOC) took a significant step towards making that dream a reality by recognizing the IFSC.

“IOC officials said the recognition is a first step toward the sport potentially being included in the Olympics. The earliest that could happen is at the 2020 Games and the IOC will have to make a decision by 2013, when it announces the host city for those Games,” reports Paul Waldie of The Globe And Mail.

Marco tells PlanetMountain.com more about the IOC ratification and what’s “missing” to complete his Olympic dream:

Sport climbing is a small, great sport, young, natural, primordial. What we’re missing though is media coverage to render competitions real events, enjoyable for everyone, even those who know little about climbing itself.”

Boulder Canyon problem: Longmont, Colorado climber Daniel Woods tackling what may be the hardest bouldering problem in the country: “I called this problem The Game, because for me the climb was a game I had to play, I had to click into game mode, and really train myself for these moves. I had to grow mentally strong and also physically strong to be able to put it together.”
