Longtime Surfside, CA surfer and board shaper Steve Adler collapsed this week at his shaping factory in Westminster–attempts to revive were not successful.

“Adler was currently ranked second in the Southern California standup paddle rankings’ stock class, was a partner in TheSUPSpot.com [a site dedicated to stand up paddling], and was in the process of helping [surfer] Jodie Nelson prepare for her arduous 39-mile battle to raise breast cancer awareness,” writes Jake Howard of ESPN.

Bonnie Tsui of The New York Times writes about the explosion of standup paddleboarding (“from Cape Cod to Cape Town”) and the history of Honolulu’s Waikiki beach boys who pioneered the sport.

“What began as a matter of practicality for the beach boys started popping up in its modern form as a full-fledged sport in the past 5 to 10 years; there are now stand-up paddleboarding competitions all over the world, from flat-water races on rivers and lakes to big-wave ocean contests.”
